European industry is currently facing one of the most challenging periods in recent years. Rising production costs, high energy prices, climate commitments, and cheap imports from non-EU countries are creating pressure that many companies have already been unable to withstand. At stake are not only figures in financial statements, but also thousands of jobs and the stability of entire regions.

For this reason, trade union representatives from five European countries gathered in Dolní Vítkovice in Ostrava for a joint demonstration rally to support the preservation of European industry. The event followed last year’s protest in Brussels entitled “For Quality Jobs” and was marked by solidarity, cooperation, and a unified voice of employees across Europe.

Slovak trade unions were represented by Monika Benedeková, President of OZ KOVO. In her speech, she openly addressed the challenges faced by Slovak industry – the shutdown of production at Slovalco, the relocation of OFZ production from Orava, the difficulties of Kovohuty Krompachy, as well as the strong energy price pressure on Železiarne Podbrezová and U.S. Steel Košice, and the decline in production in the automotive sector.

“Without rapid and systemic measures, we are losing jobs and strategic industries. Geopolitical instability is disrupting the entire supply chain,” she emphasized in her address. According to her, participation in the rally was not merely a symbolic gesture, but a clear expression of determination to defend the future of industry in Europe.

Podbrezová was also strongly represented. Representatives of the ZO OZ KOVO Železiarne Podbrezová actively participated in the event, confirming through their presence that the future of industry is a matter that directly concerns our region as well.

Deputy Chairwoman of the local organization, Monika Zimová, also thanked the company’s management for their support, assistance with organizing the trip, and providing refreshments for members. These gestures demonstrate that dialogue and cooperation between management and employees have a firm place in Podbrezová.

The participation of Podbrezová trade unionists in Ostrava clearly shows that solidarity and cross-border cooperation are key to protecting jobs and maintaining a strong industry, which forms the foundation of economic stability in regions and across Europe.
