Podbrezová football experienced a moment that will be remembered for many years. The club’s U17 team achieved a historic success by becoming Slovak champions in the country’s top youth league competition. The young Ironworkers finished ahead of renowned clubs from Bratislava, Trnava, Žilina, Košice, Prešov, and Dunajská Streda, bringing the first-ever national championship title from the highest league level to Podbrezová—whether in youth or senior football.

A Season for the History Books

The road to the title was not built on a single match, but on consistent hard work throughout the entire season. Podbrezová delivered strong performances from the autumn campaign, remaining among the league’s top teams. They continued their impressive form in the spring and sealed their historic triumph in the final home match against Trenčín.

After a narrow victory, celebrations erupted at Zelpo Arena. Players, coaches, and supporters joined together to celebrate a moment that will forever be part of the club’s history. The unforgettable atmosphere was further enhanced by the fan club, whose relentless support inspired the young footballers throughout the match.

From a Top-Six Ambition to the Summit

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that the team’s pre-season objective was merely to finish among the top six.

“Before the season, our goal was to finish in the top six, so winning the league is a small miracle. However, when I look back, we fully deserved the title. This group of players gave everything from the very first training session to the last match,” said assistant coach Ján Straka.

According to him, the foundations of success were the players’ exceptional work ethic, an outstanding dressing-room atmosphere, and the high-quality work of the entire coaching staff. A successful winter preparation period and the absence of serious injuries also played a crucial role.

Mentality Made the Difference

Ahead of the decisive match, the coaching duo of Ján Straka and Tomáš Kvačkaj placed great emphasis on the players’ mental preparation. Rather than focusing on tactical details, they concentrated on relieving pressure and ensuring the right mindset.

The young footballers were fully aware of the significance of the match, the special atmosphere, and the attention they were receiving from the public. The coaches therefore encouraged them to enjoy the historic occasion and trust in their own abilities.

Mental resilience ultimately proved to be one of the team’s greatest strengths. In the decisive encounter, the players delivered a performance that far exceeded what is typically expected from an U17 side.

An Unforgettable Experience for the Players

The players themselves could not hide their emotions after the final whistle. For many of them, it was their first match on the main stadium pitch in front of such a large crowd.

Match-winner Richard Barčiak described the game as the greatest football experience of his life. He highlighted the tremendous effort the team had invested throughout the season and thanked his teammates for their shared success.

Defender Lukáš Líška shared a similar view, emphasizing that the title was primarily won through the team’s attitude. According to him, the players approached every match with maximum commitment and never gave up.

One of the team’s leaders was also talented youngster Michal Duraj, who has already gained experience in senior football despite his young age. He was among the best performers on the pitch in the decisive match and praised the fantastic support of the fans afterward.

A Reward for Years of Youth Development

The Podbrezová U17 championship title is not only a success for one generation of players. Above all, it is confirmation of the club’s long-term and systematic youth development program, which has been built over many years.

Competing against the country’s largest football academies, the young Ironworkers proved that a club from a smaller town can develop elite footballers and successfully compete with the very best.

The fairytale season therefore received a golden ending. Podbrezová’s U17 team achieved something truly exceptional and created a legacy that can inspire future generations of young footballers. This historic title is not only a reward for hard work but also proof that determination, team spirit, and quality coaching can deliver success even against opponents who may appear stronger on paper.
