Water is a valuable resource for us. At Železiarne Podbrezová, we use modern and environmentally considerate systems that minimise water consumption in industrial processes while maximising its efficient use. Closed-loop cooling circuits allow us to repeatedly reuse the same water for cooling production equipment. We recycle 95% of water, saving up to 30 million litres of water annually. The remaining 5% is replenished only as an absolute minimum, making us one of the most water-efficient steel plants in the region.

At Železiarne Podbrezová, we make efficient use of every energy source. Heat recovered from closed cooling circuits does not go to waste—it is used to heat administrative buildings, a swimming facility, and a football pitch.
This approach not only reduces the consumption of external energy sources but also contributes to sustainable heat management within our production processes and community infrastructure. It is a tangible example of how even energy-intensive industry can manage resources responsibly and think ecologically.

At Železiarne Podbrezová, we view water as a strategic natural resource—not only for production, but also for life in the region. For decades, we have taken care of the King Matthias Spring in Lopej, which supplies drinking water to part of the municipality of Podbrezová as well as to our production site.

King Matthias Spring

The company operates a public water supply system drawing water from the King Matthias Spring. Although it is often confused with the historic Matúš Spring, it is a separate and significant source that ensures a reliable supply of drinking water for more than 1,500 residents.

Responsible Management and Maintenance

As the owner and operator of the water supply system, we ensure:

reliable water supply and quality,

water treatment and environmentally friendly disinfection,

investments in infrastructure without burdening the municipal budget.

Through regular inspections and maintenance, we guarantee the safety and stability of water supplies throughout the year.

Commitment to the Local Community

Caring for water resources is not an obligation for us—it is a commitment to people and nature. This system demonstrates our environmental and social responsibility. That is why we regard drinking water as a responsibility, not a benefit.
